Amar Bhatia serves as Associate Dean (Students) and Associate Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, where he joined the full-time faculty in 2014 after a visiting professorship during the 2013-14 academic year.
His educational qualifications include:
- BA from Queen's University
- MA from University of Sussex
- LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School
- LLM from University of Toronto (awarded Howland Prize for outstanding performance)
- SJD from University of Toronto
Professor Bhatia's research centers on the convergence of migration, Aboriginal, and Indigenous legal frameworks, with emphasis on Canadian immigration and refugee law, property law, transnational labor policies, and community-based legal advocacy. His doctoral work critically examined migrant workers' and Indigenous peoples' status under Canadian immigration law, treaty relations, and Indigenous legal traditions.
His scholarly recognition includes:
- SSHRC CGS Doctoral Scholarship for doctoral research
- Howland Prize for exceptional achievement in the LLM program
Academically active beyond teaching, he co-edits the Journal of Law and Social Policy, serves on Osgoode's Admissions Committee, sits on Parkdale Community Legal Services' Board of Directors, and contributes to the Third World Approaches to International Law Review's editorial collective. He mentors graduate students in migration-Indigenous law intersections and teaches property law, refugee law, and globalization-focused courses including the Intensive Program in Indigenous Lands, Resources and Governments.
