Amanda Power is the Sullivan Clarendon Professor in History at St Catherine's College, University of Oxford. She specializes in medieval European history with a focus on religion, power dynamics, and intellectual traditions. Power earned her PhD in History from the University of Cambridge in 2003.
Her research examines the intersection of medieval state formation, environmental management, and ideological narratives across Eurasia. She pioneers interdisciplinary approaches to climate crisis studies through networks like 'Climate Crisis Thinking in the Humanities and Social Sciences'. Her current monograph project, 'Medieval Histories of the Anthropocene', explores historical roots of ecological disruption.
Power's publications analyze how historical education and narratives shape contemporary climate responses. Her work emphasizes rethinking historical pedagogy to address ecological emergencies, with recurring themes of civilizational ideologies, resource extraction, and ecological dislocation.
She supervises DPhil students in medieval history and climate-related topics and leads multiple research initiatives including:
