Pierre Charbonnier is a CNRS research fellow and philosopher at Sciences Po’s Centre for European Studies and Comparative Politics (CEE). His work bridges political philosophy, environmental thought, and the history of ideas, focusing on the material foundations of political freedom and ecological democracy.
Education:
- École Normale Supérieure (ENS), France
- Agrégé in Philosophy
- PhD in Philosophy
- Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR)
His research centers on environmental political theory, examining how energy regimes, land use, and resource extraction have shaped modern ideologies. He argues that the liberal pact between abundance and freedom is historically contingent on fossil fuels, and that ecological crisis demands a rethinking of political subjectivity and justice. His influential book Abondance et liberté (2020) offers an environmental history of political ideas, challenging both productivism and mainstream environmentalism.
His recent publications explore themes such as war ecology, post-carbon politics, realism in environmental governance, and the Anthropocene. He advocates for an alliance between radical grassroots movements (Zadists), green Jacobin reformers, and transformative technocrats to confront climate crisis.
Scientific Contributions:
- Editorial work as director of Tracés
- Frequent contributions to Le Monde, Libération, and Green European Journal
- Interdisciplinary collaborations in environmental humanities and political theory
Charbonnier's work emphasizes the need for a symmetrization of human and non-human actors in politics, inspired by Bruno Latour and Philippe Descola. He critiques the ideological inertia of both socialism and environmentalism, calling for a new political paradigm adequate to planetary crisis.
