Dr. Amanda Jansen is a Professor in the School of Education and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware. Her research focuses on fostering student engagement and motivation in mathematics classrooms, particularly through the 'Rough Draft Math' approach, which emphasizes collaborative learning and iterative problem-solving. She has authored influential works like Rough Draft Math: Revising to Learn (2020) and led NSF-funded grants totaling over $3.2 million to study mathematics education practices.
Dr. Jansen's educational background includes a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Arizona (1996) and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Michigan State University (2004). Prior to academia, she taught mathematics in Arizona middle schools.
Her professional experience spans roles from Assistant Professor (2004–2010) to current Professor (2017–present). Key grants include the Motivating Mathematics in the Middle Grades project (NSF, 2024–2028) and the Secondary Mathematics in-the-moment Longitudinal Engagement Study (SMiLES) (NSF, 2017–2020).
Notable awards include the 2023 Excellence in Scholarly Community Engagement Award and multiple Outstanding Reviewer Awards (AERA, NCTM). Her work bridges research and practice, emphasizing equity, teacher development, and student-centered learning.
