Ann Renninger holds the Dorwin P. Cartwright Professorship in Social Theory and Social Action and serves as Chair of the Educational Studies Department at Swarthmore College. Her work bridges educational psychology, STEM education, and motivation theory, focusing on how interest drives learning and equitable educational outcomes.
Education: Postdoctoral Fellowship (Educational Testing Service); PhD, MA (Bryn Mawr College); BA (University of Pennsylvania).
Research Interests: Ann studies how educators can cultivate student interest to enhance learning, particularly in STEM fields. Her projects address teacher professional development, curriculum design for integrated CS/math instruction, and out-of-school science programs. She emphasizes practical applications of research, collaborating with institutions like Brown University and NSF-funded initiatives.
Recent Work: Current projects include preparing middle-school math teachers to integrate computing and analyzing middle-schoolers' problem-solving phases using collaborative math tasks. Her work also explores narrative framing in instructional videos and misconceptions in proportional reasoning.
Awards: 2022 AERA Sylvia Scribner Award for advancing learning research. Member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine's Board on Science Education.
