Dr. Charles Hohensee is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of Delaware, specializing in mathematics education. His research focuses on backward transfer—the influence of new learning on prior knowledge, particularly in middle/high school algebra. He has led an NSF CAREER grant examining backward transfer effects in quadratic/linear functions instruction and co-organized NSF-funded conferences for early career mathematics education researchers. His work bridges teacher practice and student learning, emphasizing quantitative reasoning and instructional design.
Education: Ph.D. in Mathematics Education (University of California San Diego, 2011), M.A. in Mathematics Education (San Diego State University, 2007), B.Sc. in Physics (University of Alberta, 1985).
Research Interests: Backward transfer, algebraic reasoning, teacher knowledge, and the integration of research on teaching and student learning. He explores how teaching practices shape students’ evolving understanding of mathematical concepts.
Grants: NSF CAREER Award ($880,300, 2017–2023); Co-PI on an NSF DRK-12 conference grant ($99,971, 2019–2022).
Awards: 2015 AERA SIG-RME Early Career Publication Award; 2012 NSF STaR Fellowship.
Teaching: Courses include mathematics content courses for pre-service elementary/middle school teachers and doctoral seminars on mathematics learning, teaching, and curriculum. Notable courses: MATH 217, 252, 253; EDUC 833, 834, 835.
Service: Former Associate Editor of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (2015–2020); contributor to cross-disciplinary teacher-coaching initiatives.
