Dr. Amanda Black serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Brock University, where she leverages her dual expertise as a certified athletic therapist and epidemiology specialist. Her work bridges clinical practice and academic research with a focus on injury prevention and evidence-based sports medicine.
Her educational foundation includes a Specialized Honours BSc in Kinesiology and Health Science, an MSc, and a PhD with Sport Medicine specialization—all completed at York University and the University of Calgary. This training informs her mixed-methods research approach.
Dr. Black leads the Injury Prevention, Clinical Intervention, and Implementation Science (I3) research group, driving projects on concussion management, injury surveillance in athletic populations, and implementation science for evidence-based protocols. Her work uniquely addresses visually impaired athletes and systemic barriers in youth sports.
She has secured major funding including a CIHR Project Grant (2023-2027) for a Canadian injury prevention platform and an SSHRC Insight Grant (2022-2025) examining socio-cultural barriers to concussion prevention.
Notable honors include three national awards recognizing her concussion research and collaborative prevention work. Her knowledge translation efforts have produced public resources like Recover Concussion and Parachute Canada's concussion protocols.
Dr. Black actively mentors graduate students through thesis projects and summer studentships, with Department of Kinesiology applications due mid-February annually. Her lab collaborates with sporting organizations and high schools on implementation studies.
