Alyssa Park is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Iowa, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, where she also serves as the Honors Director. Her research centers on modern Korea, with a focus on transnational migration, borderlands, and imperial dynamics in East Asia and the Russian Far East.
Education:
- PhD in History, Columbia University
- AB, Princeton University
Her research explores the historical formation of sovereignty through the movement of Korean populations across Northeast Asia. Her acclaimed book Sovereignty Experiments: Korean Migrants and the Building of Borders in Northeast Asia, 1860–1945 (Cornell University Press, 2019) examines how states contested claims over land and people amid mass migration. She is currently working on a second book on population displacement in the two Koreas from 1945 to 1950, analyzing refugee experiences during the postcolonial transition and Cold War formation.
Her recent publications reflect her engagement with both historical scholarship and the institutional development of Korean studies as a global discipline. The articles demonstrate a strong focus on migration, identity, and post-imperial transitions.
