Alyssa E Brown is a Senior Lecturer in Tourism and Events at the University of Sunderland, where she joined in 2014. She has been a lecturer since 2011 and currently serves as Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Events Management. She also teaches on the BSc (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality Management programs, focusing on events, tourism, and hospitality education.
Dr. Brown's research interests span multiple dimensions of event studies and management, with particular focus on service experiences, digital media communication, quality, communities, social inclusion, accessibility, and tourist behavior at special interest events. Her work demonstrates a strong commitment to understanding the complex dynamics of festival experiences, particularly at music festivals, with emphasis on inclusive practices and accessibility considerations. She has developed expertise in qualitative research methods, particularly in utilizing informal conversations as a creative method at live events.
Her publication portfolio reveals a consistent focus on accessibility and inclusion in event contexts, with several 2024-2025 publications examining accessibility provisions at live music events held in sports stadia. She has also made significant contributions to understanding solo eventgoers' experiences at UK music events (2022-2023), co-creation and engagement in festival experiences (2023), and the role of digital media communication in rock music festival experiences (2020). Her research demonstrates an evolving trajectory from understanding basic festival experiences toward more nuanced examinations of accessibility, inclusion, and diverse audience segments.
Dr. Brown actively supervises undergraduate and master's major projects, as well as PhD students, demonstrating her commitment to developing the next generation of event management professionals. Her teaching responsibilities include module leadership for several key courses including TLH109 Experiencing Events, TLH110 Staging Events, TLH318 Contemporary Issues in Events, and others that form the core curriculum for events management students.
