Dr Alwena Morgan is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at Swansea University Medical School, part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science. She specializes in neuroprotection, neurodegenerative disorders, and lipid analysis, particularly focusing on ghrelin's role in neurogenesis and Parkinson’s disease. A fluent Welsh speaker, she leads Welsh provision for undergraduate biomedical programs, ensuring eligibility for Welsh scholarships and bursaries. She has been nominated three times and won once for the SUMS Outreach Award for her work with bilingual school pupils in years 12 and 13. She collaborates closely with the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol to promote Welsh-medium education.
Her research integrates mass spectrometry-based lipid analysis with neurodegenerative disease mechanisms, exploring ghrelin’s neuroprotective potential and mitochondrial dynamics in Parkinson’s models. Key contributions include developing protocols for mRNA analysis in human brain tissue and automated quantification of mitochondrial fragmentation. She also innovates in medical education, implementing flipped classrooms for biochemistry teaching.
- Research Themes: Neuroprotection, Neurodegeneration, Ghrelin Signaling, Lipidomics, Medical Education
- Notable Achievements: SUMS Outreach Award winner, 3 nominations, Welsh-medium curriculum development
- Collaborations: Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, Swansea Bay University Health Board
Dr Morgan has supervised multiple PhD/MSc students investigating topics like ghrelin-GHS-R signaling in autophagy and biomarkers for dementia diagnosis. Her work bridges clinical and basic research, emphasizing translational outcomes for neurological conditions.
