Prof. Altan Kar serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Electronic Commerce and Management at Yeditepe University's Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, where he has held academic positions since 2015 (promoted to full Professor in 2019) and administrative roles including Vice Dean (2020-2021).
His educational foundation includes a BA in Anthropology from Istanbul University (1988), MA in Sociology from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (2001), and PhD in Sociology (2005) focused on gift-giving as symbolic cultural relations.
Research interests span sociology, consumer behavior, e-commerce, and gender dynamics, with emphasis on how digitalization reshapes social structures. His work examines social polarization in gated communities, evolving masculinity patterns, media spectacles in reality TV, and self-gifting as consumption culture, consistently analyzing intersections of technology, identity, and market behavior in Turkish society.
Journal publications (2004-2013) reveal a trajectory from globalization's societal impacts to contemporary digital culture studies, highlighting recurring themes: the role of social media in relationship formation, pandemic-era shifts in online consumer behavior, and gendered body politics in beauty standards.
