Allison Stanger is the Middlebury Distinguished Endowed Professor of Political Science at Middlebury College. She concurrently serves as an affiliate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society and co-director of the GETTING-Plurality Research Network. As a globally recognized scholar, she holds affiliations with institutions like the Santa Fe Institute (External Professor) and the Digital Humanism Initiative (Vienna). Her research bridges technology governance, democracy, and international relations, with a focus on whistleblowing’s role in sustaining democratic accountability.
Stanger holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University, alongside advanced degrees from the London School of Economics and Ball State University. She has taught extensively at Middlebury, designing courses such as Politics of Virtual Realities and Who Elected Big Tech?, which critically examine technology’s impact on democracy.
Her recent work includes Whistleblowers: Honesty in America from Washington to Trump (Yale, 2019) and co-edited volumes like Complexity Economics (Santa Fe Institute Press, 2020). She has advised U.S. government entities, including Secretary Clinton’s State Department, and testified before Congress on issues like wartime contracting and free speech on campuses.
Stanger’s awards include the 2020 Cary and Ann Maguire Chair in Ethics at the Library of Congress and a Stanford University fellowship. Her upcoming book Who Elected Big Tech? (Yale, under contract) explores tech giants’ growing influence over global governance.
