Susan Benesch is a Faculty Associate at Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, where she directs the Dangerous Speech Project. She also serves as an adjunct professor at American University's School of International Service, teaching international human rights law. Her research focuses on identifying and countering speech that risks inciting violence, while safeguarding free expression. She advises tech companies and governments on content governance and online discourse, with expertise in hate speech, disinformation, and technology's role in democracy.
Educated at Yale Law School (JD) and Georgetown University (LLM), Benesch has held roles at Amnesty International and as a journalist in Haiti and Latin America. Her work combines legal analysis with empirical studies, such as the Umati project in Kenya analyzing online speech during elections. She advocates for 'counterspeech' strategies to combat harmful rhetoric through community-driven norms rather than censorship.
Key projects include the Dangerous Speech Project, which develops frameworks to assess and mitigate inflammatory language, and collaborations with organizations like Riot Games and Facebook to study platform interventions. Her writings span law journals, policy briefs, and op-eds addressing global challenges like online radicalization and digital rights.
