Dr. Allison W. Jacobel is an Assistant Professor of Earth and Climate Sciences at Middlebury College and a Jeanne Epp Barksdale ’48 Junior Faculty Fellow. She holds a Visiting Scientist position at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, University of Colorado at Boulder. Her research focuses on reconstructing ocean-atmosphere interactions using geochemical and sedimentological proxies, with an emphasis on understanding mechanisms driving climate change and improving future climate predictions.
Dr. Jacobel earned her Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, followed by a Voss Postdoctoral Fellowship at Brown University. Her teaching portfolio includes courses such as Earth’s Oceans and Coastlines, Climate History, and Senior Thesis Research Seminars, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to Earth systems and scientific writing.
Her research employs radiogenic/stable isotopes (U, Th, Pa, O, C, N), trace elements (B/Ca), and microfossil analyses to reconstruct ocean conditions like temperature, salinity, and oxygen levels. Recent projects involve studying Pacific Ocean carbon storage, equatorial Pacific dust dynamics, and interplay between dust fertilization and climate. She leads the Facility for Oceanographic Research @ Middlebury (FOR@M), fostering student research and fieldwork.
Awards include the Jeanne Epp Barksdale Junior Faculty Fellowship. Her work bridges laboratory studies, field expeditions (e.g., Nordic Seas 2023, Labrador Sea 2017 cruises), and educational outreach through modules like Project Eddie. During 2024–25, she is on sabbatical at CU Boulder,暂停 thesis advising but continuing research collaborations.
