Franco Marcantonio is a Professor and Jane and Ken R. Williams ’45 Chair in Ocean Drilling Science at Texas A&M University’s Department of Geology & Geophysics. He holds a PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences from Columbia University (1994), an MSc in Geology from McMaster University (1988), and a BSc in Chemistry and Geology from Carleton University (1986).
Research Interests: His work focuses on radiogenic and non-traditional stable isotope applications, including climate change mechanisms and human disease biomarkers. Key areas include radiogenic isotope tracers for climate dynamics and metal isotope biomarkers for medical diagnostics.
Recent Research Trends: His articles emphasize isotopic analysis in marine and environmental contexts, with recent emphasis on equatorial Pacific oceanography, lead contamination tracing, and biomarker development for diseases like hepatocellular carcinoma. He also explores anthropogenic impacts on water systems and paleoenvironmental reconstructions through ice cores and sediment records.
- Awards: 2020 College of Geoscience Dean’s Research Award, 2017 Williams Chair, 2015 Geological Society of America Fellow.
Advising & Grants: Advised students include D. Schimmenti, M. AlSaif, and others. His work integrates grants on climate proxies, hydrocarbon systems, and environmental health. Collaborations span ocean drilling, geochemical cycles, and interdisciplinary biomedical applications.
