Debbie Thomas is a Professor at Texas A&M University, serving as Executive Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at Texas A&M University at Galveston and Associate Provost. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2002), M.S. (1998), and B.S. from Brown University (1995). Her research focuses on paleoceanography, particularly Cretaceous and Cenozoic deep-sea sediment records to study global heat transport and thermohaline circulation patterns. She employs radiogenic isotopes, stable isotopes, and trace element geochemistry to reconstruct ancient oceanic processes.
Key research areas include evolution of Atlantic and Pacific thermohaline circulation, reconstruction of South Atlantic deep-water formation, and Eolian sedimentation in the Pacific during the Paleogene. Awards include the Distinguished Lecturer (2008-2009) and Montague Center for Teaching Excellence Scholar Award (2008). Her work bridges geochemistry and paleoclimatology, addressing climate transitions from greenhouse to icehouse states.
Publications span over two decades, with recent emphasis on Cretaceous Southern Ocean dynamics and Paleocene Pacific dust fluxes. Her advising includes student-led studies on deep-water formation and climate variability. Active in interdisciplinary oceanography, she contributes to global sediment core analyses and paleoceanographic modeling.
