Professor Alexander Piotrowski is a Professor of Palaeoclimatology at the University of Cambridge's Department of Earth Sciences. His research focuses on reconstructing ocean-climate linkages using geochemical tracers, particularly radiogenic isotopes (Nd and Pb) to understand global thermohaline circulation changes over recent Earth history. He leads a research group analyzing ocean geochemistry at key Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Ocean locations to investigate deep water mass sourcing, nutrient dynamics, and overturning rates.
Notable contributions include linking North Atlantic circulation strength to neodymium isotope records and ²³¹Pa/²³⁰Th proxies, as well as discovering South Atlantic deep water sourcing changes during glacial transitions. His work has advanced understanding of glacial-interglacial transitions, millennial-scale variability, and Heinrich events' impacts on ocean circulation.
Teaching responsibilities include supervisions in palaeoclimatology and geochemical methods. He currently oversees PhD students researching ocean-climate interactions. His research facilities include access to state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation at the Bullard Laboratories, part of the Department's world-class infrastructure.
Key affiliations include membership in the University's Climate Change and Environment research group. His work interfaces with terrestrial weathering studies and sediment transport dynamics, expanding interdisciplinary approaches to Earth system science.
