Gisela Winckler is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Columbia University, and a Lamont Associate Research Professor at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Her work integrates physics and isotope geochemistry to study climate and biogeochemical cycles.
- Research focuses on dust fluxes, ocean dynamics, and their roles in climate systems.
- Involved in NSF-funded projects on East Antarctic ice sheet fluctuations and hydrothermal activity in the Southern Ocean.
- Co-led the DUSTSPEC workshop to compile global dust records for climate modeling.
Her research spans isotope geochemistry, paleoclimatology, and oceanography, with emphasis on dust-climate interactions and marine productivity. Recent projects include the VOICE expedition to the Pacific Northwest and analysis of Antarctic sediment cores.
Key publications highlight glacial-interglacial dust variability, hydrothermal venting in the Southern Ocean, and geoengineering limitations. She was awarded the Excellence in Mentoring Award for her guidance of students like Ale Borunda.
Current affiliations include Columbia University's Earth Institute, with a focus on integrating fieldwork, geochemical analyses, and isotope dating techniques to understand Earth's climate history.
