Maureen E. Raymo is the G. Unger Vetlesen Professor of Earth and Climate Science at Columbia University, holding roles as Interim Director of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Co-Founding Dean Emerita of the Columbia Climate School. She specializes in paleoclimatology, marine geology, and ice sheet dynamics, with a focus on reconstructing past sea levels and understanding natural climate variability. Her work includes leadership in international ocean drilling projects like IODP Expedition 382 and the NSF-funded PLIOMAX Project.
Education: PhD (1989), M.Phil (1988), M.A. (1985) in Geology from Columbia University; Sc.B. (1982) from Brown University.
Research interests span the history of Earth’s climate, particularly Antarctic ice sheet stability, sea level changes, and mechanisms driving glacial cycles. Key contributions include the ‘uplift-weathering hypothesis’ and the ‘Lisiecki-Raymo δ18O Stack.’
Publications highlight advancements in paleoceanography, with recent work focusing on Last Interglacial sea level reconstructions and Antarctic ice dynamics. Awards include the Wollaston Medal (2014), Milankovic Medal, and Maurice Ewing Medal, alongside fellowships in the National Academy of Sciences and the Explorers Club.
Advising includes mentoring graduate/postdoctoral researchers (e.g., Alessio Rovere, Natalya Gomez) through projects like PLIOMAX. Major grants support initiatives such as the U.S. Science Support Program for IODP and HoldTheBeef.org’s environmental impact studies.
Labs/Teams: Lamont-Doherty Core Repository, IODP collaborations, and the PLIOMAX research group. Current projects include studies on Pliocene sea level paradoxes and Antarctic iceberg dynamics.
