Allen N. Swords is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at Clemson University, part of the College of Arts and Humanities. He holds both a B.A. (1997) and M.A. (2002) in English from Clemson University, where he has taught since 2002, accumulating over 22 years of full-time teaching experience. His academic focus includes Sequential Art, Popular Culture, Film, and Post-WWII Literature, with a particular emphasis on integrating diverse media into pedagogy.
Education: M.A. English (Clemson, 2002); B.A. English (Clemson, 1997). Teaching specialties include Composition and Rhetoric (ENGL 1030), Literature in 20th-/21st-Century Contexts (ENGL 2150), World Literature (ENGL 2120), and Honors courses. He has instructed over 20 different English courses, adapting seamlessly to both face-to-face and online modalities.
Research Interests: Promoting graphic novel literacy, popular culture studies, and innovative pedagogical approaches to enhance critical thinking and writing skills across disciplines. He hosts an alumni book club and delivers public lectures on graphic novels in Anderson and Pickens counties.
Awards: Recipient of Clemson’s highest teaching honor, the Alumni Master Teacher Award (2022), alongside multiple recognitions including the Fluor Daniel Excellence in Teaching Award (2007–08) and consistent high student evaluations. His leadership includes coordination with the Clemson FIRST program and Summer Start initiatives to support student success.
Advising & Engagement: Averages 12 student advising sessions annually for post-graduate opportunities, mentors student athletes, and emphasizes cross-disciplinary communication skills. Collaborations include work with Sherry Dorris and the Nieri Center for academic support.
Labs/Teams: Active in public outreach through library lectures and alumni engagement initiatives, fostering community connections to literary and cultural studies.
