John Yu Branscum serves as an Associate Professor of English in the Language, Literature, and Writing Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania's College of Arts, Humanities, Media, and Public Affairs. His office is located in 506-H Leonard Hall on the university's Indiana, PA campus.
Dr. Branscum earned his PhD in Creative Writing and Comparative Literature from the University of Cincinnati in 2010 and his MA in Creative Writing and Linguistics from the University of Louisville in 2002. His scholarly work centers on three interconnected domains: identity formation in multicultural contexts, popular culture studies, and cross-disciplinary connections between diverse knowledge systems.
His research explores how individual narratives challenge theoretical generalizations, with roots in his upbringing in migrant laborer communities and teaching experiences in China and Costa Rica. This has produced the Appalachian literary anthology Red Holler and poetry collection Skinwalkers, both challenging regional stereotypes, alongside editorial work for the international magazine Black & Grey focused on hybrid identities. His popular culture scholarship examines ecological themes in anime and comic books, with creative publications in journals like Evergreen Review and North American Review.
Dr. Branscum teaches courses including ENGL 121: Humanities Literature: Monsters and Monstrosity, ENGL 122: Introduction to English Studies, ENGL 327: Writing Creative Nonfiction, and ENGL 335: Literary Nonfiction. His pedagogical approach emphasizes narrative understanding as essential to students' professional and personal development, incorporating techniques like montage essay forms and spiritual writing. His interdisciplinary methodology draws connections between quantum mathematics, anthropology, animal studies, and psychology across all aspects of his academic work.
