Alix Shield is a Lecturer in the Department of Indigenous Studies at Simon Fraser University. She earned her PhD in English from SFU in Spring 2020, preceded by an MA in English from Dalhousie University and a BA (Hons) in English from Acadia University.
Her research combines digital humanities methodologies with the analysis of collaboratively-authored Indigenous literatures in Canada, focusing on works like E. Pauline Johnson's and Chief Joe and Mary Capilano's Legends of Vancouver (1911) and Maria Campbell's Halfbreed (1973). She has contributed to Indigenous digital heritage projects through archival research, digitization, and Drupal web development.
Shield has participated in the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) since 2013 and co-taught the course 'Drupal for Digital Humanities Projects' in 2018. She also worked on the SSHRC-funded 'The People and the Text' project and assisted with digital resources for the Virtual Museum of Canada's 'Sq’éwlets: A Stó:lō-Coast Salish Community in the Fraser River Valley' initiative in 2016-17.
