Alix Ashare serves as Associate Professor of Medicine and Microbiology & Immunology at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. Her primary appointment is in the Department of Pulmonary with laboratory space in Borwell Hall. She maintains active clinical connections through Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center as evidenced by her hitchcock.org email address.
Dr. Ashare's research program centers on lung macrophage biology in inflammatory conditions. Her laboratory investigates regional heterogeneity of lung inflammation in patients with cystic fibrosis, asthma, and COPD, with particular focus on how hypoxia impacts macrophage gene expression and function. Current work examines the relationship between impaired lipid homeostasis in lung macrophages and viral immunity in e-cigarette users, as well as mechanisms underlying non-resolving inflammation in CF patients.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on cystic fibrosis pathophysiology, with significant attention to macrophage function, bacterial interactions (particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and organ crosstalk (notably the lung-kidney axis). Her work spans basic science investigations of cellular mechanisms through translational studies with direct clinical implications.
Dr. Ashare leads the Ashare Lung Biology and Epigenetics Lab with a multidisciplinary team comprising graduate students, clinical research assistants, senior research fellows, and lab managers. Her laboratory maintains both Discovery Science and Clinical Research teams working collaboratively on projects spanning from bench research to patient-oriented studies. Current lab members include Haley Hazlett (PEMM Graduate Student), Molly Williams (Clinical Research Assistant), Dan Aridgides (Senior Research Fellow), Diane Mellinger (Lab Manager), and Sophia Shomento (Undergraduate Research Assistant).
