Dr Alison Toop is a Teaching Fellow in Medical Ethics at the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science, University of Leeds. She holds a BA in Philosophy and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Leeds, and an MA in Political Philosophy from the University of York. Her interdisciplinary work bridges political liberalism, applied ethics, and social ontology.

Her research focuses on marriage’s institutional legitimacy, political liberalism, and the ethical dimensions of medical contexts—particularly autonomy in reproductive decision-making. She explored these themes in her PhD, Marriage and the Political Liberal State: An investigation into the nature of the marital relationship and the legitimacy of a political institution of marriage, and contributed to bioethics research at the Nuffield Council on Bioethics (2016).
Teaching responsibilities include medical ethics across all levels of the MBChB undergraduate program and the MSc in Physician Associate Studies, alongside undergraduate modules in her home school. She is affiliated with the Centre for Aesthetic, Moral and Political Philosophy.
