Dr Alison Kitson is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Director at the newly established Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education (CCCSE) within UCL's Institute of Education (IOE). She also leads Initial Teacher Education programs, blending theory and classroom practice. Her work focuses on empowering educators to address climate change and sustainability across disciplines. Formerly Programme Director at the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), she has extensive experience spanning school teaching, policy, and teacher training.
Her current initiatives include the Teach Climate History project, integrating environmental perspectives into historical education through themes like colonization and industrialization. She emphasizes breaking disciplinary silos to foster holistic understanding of humanity's relationship with nature. Her 14-year tenure at UCL has seen her supervise over 250 trainee history teachers, impacting thousands of students. As Deputy President of the Historical Association, she advocates for subject-specific teacher support.
Kitson champions accessible professional development, believing all educators should have equitable access to high-quality resources. Her personal passions include environmental advocacy, historical scholarship, and finding inspiration in natural landscapes like the South Downs. She balances her academic life with artistic interests, citing Joni Mitchell and Barbara Kingsolver as creative influences.
