Alice Wickenden is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the Faculty of English, University of Cambridge, where she investigates contested histories of early modern library collections. Her research critically examines how libraries should address problematic pasts involving funding from slavery and the oil trade, or acquisitions obtained through theft, arguing these histories function as material forces shaping both physical books and resultant research.
Her work bridges critical heritage studies and early modern scholarship, focusing on decolonial approaches to library collections. A key output is her forthcoming monograph Hans Sloane’s Library Collections and the Production of Knowledge (Cambridge University Press, 2025), which analyzes how colonial-era collecting practices influenced knowledge production.
Her major recognition includes:
- Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship
This prestigious fellowship supports her investigation into how historical contexts of library formation impact contemporary research ethics and collection management, positioning her work within the University of Cambridge's Collections Connections Communities initiative for collaborative collection-based research.
