Alice Margaria is an Assistant Professor in Legal Questions Pertaining to Reproduction and Genetics at the University of Zurich (UZH), Switzerland. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the interdisciplinary Research Program 'Human Reproduction Reloaded.' Previously, she was a Senior Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle. Her expertise spans family law, human rights, and diversity, with a focus on European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) jurisprudence. She holds an LL.M. (Distinction) in Human Rights from University College London, an LL.M. in Comparative, European, and International Laws, and a Ph.D. in Law from the European University Institute.
Her research integrates law and anthropology, emphasizing empirical analysis of ECtHR case law and its impact on unconventional families. She leads the Volkswagen Foundation-funded project 'Who is the Court For? Bringing the Human (back) into Human Rights Research.' Margaria has taught gender and diversity courses at institutions including Free University Berlin, Koç University, and the University of Passau. She has organized the annual judicial study visit 'Diversity in the Courtroom' since 2021 and collaborated with organizations like UNICEF and the OSCE.
Awards include the Chaire Genre (2020) and a Bavarian Gender Equality Grant (2021) for comparative legal studies on fatherhood. Her work bridges legal theory and practice, advocating for human-centered approaches to rights litigation.
