Prof. Dr. iur. Alice Margaria is an Assistant Professor of Law and Reproduction at the University of Zurich's Faculty of Law and Co-Director of the URPP Human Reproduction Reloaded initiative. She holds dual LL.M. degrees from University College London and the European University Institute, and a Ph.D. in Law from the European University Institute (2015).
Her research sits at the intersection of Family Law, Human Rights Law, and Legal Anthropology, focusing on legal constructions of fatherhood, gender dynamics in reproduction, and the normative implications of family diversity. She leads the Volkswagen Foundation-funded project “Who is the Court for? Bringing the Human (Back) into Human Rights Research” and co-edits the 2024 Leading Works in Law and Anthropology volume.
Recent scholarship explores ECtHR jurisprudence on trans parental rights, surrogacy regulation, and gender equality in reproduction. Her 2019 monograph The Construction of Fatherhood (Cambridge UP) remains a seminal text in socio-legal fatherhood analysis. She organizes interdisciplinary workshops on reproduction and chairs special issues in Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law and I•CON.
A alice.margaria@ius.uzh.ch contact, she collaborates with networks like the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (2020-2023) and the Margherita von Brentano Center (2021-2023). Current projects interrogate the human rights dimensions of assisted reproduction technologies and transnational family law challenges.
