Dr. Alice Joo is a Lecturer in Korean Studies at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), affiliated with the School of Humanities and Languages within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from UNSW, a Graduate Diploma in Translation from Western Sydney University (WSU), and dual undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Advanced Korean Studies (First Class Honours) from UNSW. Her research focuses on Korean heritage language education, sociolinguistics, bilingualism, and language pedagogy, with a particular emphasis on error analysis, instructional methodologies, and language attitudes. She is a recipient of the Korea Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship and the 2021 UNSW Humanities and Languages Teaching Award.
Teaching-wise, Dr. Joo specializes in Korean language instruction for beginners and intermediates, as well as translation and interpreting. She teaches courses such as ARTS1660 Korean 1, ARTS2660 Korean 3, and ARTS3330 Interpreting and Translation for Advanced Learners. Her work integrates innovative pedagogical approaches and community language contexts.
Dr. Joo actively contributes to academic communities through her roles as Executive Committee member of the Korean Studies Association of Australasia (KSAA), and membership in the Modern Language Teachers Association (MLTA) and the International Circle of Korean Linguistics (ICKL). She is also a certified translator with the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
Her research supervision spans Korean linguistics, language education, bilingualism, and innovative teaching tools. Key themes include heritage language maintenance, second language acquisition, and the application of sociolinguistic insights to classroom practices.
