Seong-Chul Shin

Dr. Seong-Chul Shin is a Professor in the School of Arts, Design & Architecture at the University of New South Wales, specializing in applied linguistics with a strong focus on Korean language education across multiple contexts.

• PhD in Linguistics (University of New South Wales)
• Master of Applied Linguistics (Macquarie University)
• Master of Education in Korean as a Foreign Language (Yonsei University)

Professor Shin's research centers on applied and educational linguistics, with particular expertise in Korean as a foreign, second, or heritage language. His work spans error analysis in L2 Korean writing, curriculum development for Korean language programs at secondary and tertiary levels, and sociolinguistic issues affecting Korean language learners in diverse cultural contexts. He has made significant contributions to understanding language maintenance in bicultural families and heritage language development.

With an extensive publication record including 42 journal articles, 7 books, 16 book chapters, and numerous other scholarly outputs, Professor Shin has established himself as a leading authority in Korean language education. His research demonstrates consistent focus on practical applications of linguistic theory to language teaching methodologies and curriculum design.

Professor Shin actively supervises PhD candidates and has examined numerous HDR theses. He serves as an ARC Assessor (2010-current) and holds editorial board positions with the Journal of Korean Language Education (2009-current), Language Facts and Perspectives (2015-current), and Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language (2016-current). His research has been supported by KF and AKS Fellowship Grants, FASS and School Research Grants, and Australian Government ministries including Foreign Affairs and Education and Training.

He maintains active involvement in professional organizations including the International Association of Korean Language Education (IAKLE), Korean Studies Association of Australia (KSAA), and International Circle of Korean Linguistics (ICKL), serving in various capacities including board member, conference organizer, and peer reviewer.
