Dr Alice Andrews is a Senior Lecturer in Visual Culture and Programme Leader for the Graduate Diploma in Contemporary Art History at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research focuses on Critical Disability Studies, autoimmunity narratives, and the intersection of philosophy with artistic practices. She holds a PhD from Goldsmiths (2011) and has published extensively on topics including ableism in academia, autoimmune illness narratives, and Derridean deconstruction. Her work bridges disciplines such as medical humanities, psychoanalysis, and biopolitics, emphasizing embodied experiences and ethical responses to chronic illness.
Education: PG Cert in Teaching Management (2014), PhD Visual Cultures (2012), MA Contemporary Art Theory (2007), BA Fine Art Painting (2003).
Research Interests: Andrews explores how disability studies, deconstruction, and Eastern philosophies articulate with creative practices. Current projects include a monograph on 'ease within diseased times' and the role of art in fostering collective responsibility. Her work challenges ableist frameworks through autobiographical and interdisciplinary methods.
Publications: Includes chapters in Ableism in Academia (2020) and Painscapes (2017), plus journal articles in Parallax and Mosaic. Key themes include autoimmunity as metaphor, academic ableism, and the ethics of biopolitical systems.
