Touko Vaahtera is an Academy Research Fellow at the University of Eastern Finland's Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies. Their current project, 'Cripping Digital Capacity' (2023–2027), funded by the Research Council of Finland, explores the history and implications of digital capacity narratives through critical disability studies and crip theory. Previously, they authored Biopolitics of Swimming and the Re-articulation of Able-Bodiedness (2022), analyzing ableism through the lens of swimming’s cultural significance.
Research interests include disability studies, biopolitics, and digitalization’s societal impacts. Recent work critiques education policy’s assumptions about digital skills and citizenship. Their work intersects queercrip methodologies, affect studies, and cultural analysis. Key publications challenge normative frameworks of bodily capability and citizenship.
Notable grants include the Academy of Finland Research Fellowship. They lead the 'Feminist, Cultural, and Social Studies of Education' research group. Future work extends digital capacity studies, emphasizing anticolonial and anti-capitalist critiques.
