Ali Torabi Haghighi is a Professor in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Technology, University of Oulu. He leads the Hydrosystems Engineering & Management research group within the Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit. With a PhD from the University of Oulu (2010–2014), his career spans over two decades of integrating academic theory with practical engineering experience.
- D.Sc.(Tech.)
- Dr.Sc.(Tech.)
- M.Sc.(Tech.)
- B.Sc.(Tech.)
His research focuses on dam and hydropower operation, cold-climate hydrology, and sustainability in water systems. He specializes in remote sensing applications, smart irrigation, and environmental flow regimes, with additional expertise in geotechnical engineering. His work addresses critical global challenges like climate adaptation and transboundary resource management.
Dr. Haghighi has supervised 13 doctoral and 22 MSc theses across Finland, Iran, and Italy. He teaches advanced courses such as River Engineering and Integrated Water Resources Management, informed by 15+ years of professional experience in hydraulic structures. His pedagogy emphasizes digital tools, multicultural education, and industry collaboration.
Current projects include RE-HYDRO (rethinking hydropower management), Water-Energy-Food nexus assessments, and data assimilation for hydrological modeling. He contributes to transboundary river basin management and nutrient recycling in agriculture, aligning theoretical research with real-world applications.
