Abubaker Omer is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Built Environment and Water and Environmental Engineering at Aalto University. Previously, he served as a Research Fellow at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology from September 2022 to October 2024. His research focuses on water resources management at river basin scales, examining the complex interactions between climate change, land use change, and human activities on hydrological systems.
Omer's research interests center on hydrology, climate extremes, and water scarcity at river basin scales. He investigates how climate change, land-use change, and human activities collectively impact water resources, with particular attention to socioeconomic exposure to extremes such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves. His methodological expertise includes hydrological and statistical modeling, precipitation merging techniques, and evapotranspiration estimation in arid regions. Currently, he is studying nutrient dynamics at river basin scales under varying climate, land-use, and management scenarios. His work spans regions including the Nile Basin, Yellow River Basin, South Asia, and Pakistan, with a strong focus on transboundary water issues.
Analysis of Omer's publication record reveals a strong focus on advanced hydrological modeling techniques, particularly copula-based quantile regression for satellite precipitation merging in challenging terrains. His recent work (2023-2025) shows increasing attention to transboundary water management, dam efficacy in hydro-extremes management, and socio-economic vulnerability to flood risks in Africa. His research consistently connects technical hydrological analysis with socioeconomic implications, demonstrating an interdisciplinary approach to water resources challenges. The publication pattern shows steady growth from 2016 through 2025, with particular concentration in high-impact hydrology journals.
Omer is actively involved in the DIWA Flagship: Digital Water Resources Flagship project (2024-2028), where he serves as a Project Member alongside Principal Investigator J. Hämäläinen. This project focuses on climate change adaptation, environmental impact assessment, streamflow analysis, flow resistance, and water scarcity solutions. His research contributes significantly to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water and sanitation, climate action, and life on land, addressing critical global water challenges through innovative digital and analytical approaches.
