Professor James Pittock is a faculty member at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, The Australian National University. He holds the rank of Professor and specializes in environmental governance, climate change adaptation, water management, and biodiversity conservation. His work spans Africa, Asia, and Australia, focusing on sustainable development challenges such as irrigation systems, hydropower impacts, and climate policy.
Education: BSc and PhD in Environmental Sciences.
Research Interests: Climate change adaptation, freshwater ecosystems, energy-water nexus, river basin management, and sustainable agriculture. He leads projects on irrigation in Africa, energy-food-water systems in Southeast Asia, and governance of transboundary water resources.
Publications: Over 200 articles, including recent works on climate adaptation in African irrigation, pumped hydro energy storage, and Mekong River hydropower impacts. His research emphasizes policy integration and sustainable resource management.
Awards: Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Australian Institute of Company Directors graduate.
Grants/Projects: Leads initiatives on snow gum dieback, pumped storage hydropower in Himalayas, and smallholder irrigation transformation in southern Africa. Collaborates with WWF, the World Commission on Protected Areas, and government bodies.
Labs/Teams: Editor of Regional Environmental Change and Frontiers - Freshwater Science, and chairs ACT Natural Resources Management Advisory Committee.
