Dr. Ali Abu-Alfa is a tenured Professor of Medicine and Chairperson of the Department of Internal Medicine at the American University of Beirut (AUB). He also serves as Director of the AUB Human Research Protection Program and Research Affairs Office. Previously, he spent two decades at Yale School of Medicine and remains an Adjunct Professor in Nephrology there. His academic roles include leading the AUB Nephrology Division until 2023.
Education: MD from AUB (1985), Internal Medicine Residency at Northwestern University (1990), Nephrology Fellowship at Yale (1993). Board certifications include American Board of Internal Medicine - Nephrology, AHSCP Hypertension Specialist, and Fellow of the American Heart Association.
Research Interests:
- Peritoneal dialysis optimization and accessibility in resource-limited settings
- Chronic kidney disease management, including anemia and CKD-MBD
- Gadolinium-based contrast agent safety in renal patients
- Genetic studies of glomerular diseases in high-consanguinity populations
- SGLT2 inhibitors in CKD treatment barriers
