Professor David Johnson is a leading nephrologist serving as Director of the Metro South Kidney and Transplant Service (MSKATS) and Medical Director of the Queensland Kidney Transplant Service (QKTS) at Princess Alexandra Hospital. He holds dual professorships in Medicine and Population Health at the University of Queensland and directs the Centre for Kidney Disease Research in Brisbane. Internationally, he co-chairs the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas, the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis Guidelines on Peritonitis Prevention and Treatment, and the Global PDOPPS Steering Committee. Previously, he served as President of the ISPD (2018-2020) and Councillor of the ISN (2013-2019).
Professor Johnson earned his MB BS with Honors and University Medal, followed by a PhD from Sydney University and a Doctor of Medical Research degree. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN), International Society of Nephrology (FISN), Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (FAHMS), and Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).
His research focuses on advancing kidney disease care through clinical trials, quality improvement initiatives, and global health policy. Professor Johnson has published over 1,200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and led landmark studies including CKD-FIX, IDEAL, and balANZ trials that have shaped international clinical practice. His work spans dialysis techniques, kidney transplantation, early detection of kidney disease, and implementation of evidence-based practices in diverse healthcare settings worldwide.
Professor Johnson's recent publications reveal a continued focus on global kidney health disparities, peritoneal dialysis outcomes, and innovative approaches to managing kidney disease complications. His work with the ISN-GKHA highlights regional variations in kidney care access and quality, while his clinical trials continue to refine optimal dialysis and transplantation strategies. His research increasingly incorporates geriatric considerations for older adults with kidney disease and addresses health equity issues for Indigenous and marginalized populations.

Professor Johnson has led numerous high-impact, multi-center randomized controlled trials that have informed global clinical practice, including CKD-FIX, IDEAL, balANZ, HONEYPOT, TESTING, HERO, and IMPENDIA. He currently serves as principal investigator for the TEACH-PD and INCH-HD trials and chairs the PHOSPHATE Trial Global Steering Committee. His research has been supported by major national and international funding bodies, enabling him to establish significant infrastructure including the Australian Peritonitis Registry and implement nationwide quality improvement initiatives that reduced peritonitis rates by two-thirds.
As Director of the Centre for Kidney Disease Research, Professor Johnson leads a multidisciplinary team focused on improving kidney health outcomes through innovative research and implementation science. His team successfully established the Australian Peritonitis Registry and led the National PD Peritonitis Quality Improvement Project. He also spearheaded the universal implementation of automated laboratory reporting of eGFR in Australia and New Zealand, which increased national detection rates of kidney disease by 40%. His work with the International Society of Nephrology's Global Kidney Health Atlas team provides critical insights into worldwide kidney care capacity and disparities.
