Professor Alexandra Wilson is a Senior Research Fellow in Music at Jesus College, University of Oxford. She holds a PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London (2002), with prior fellowships at Worcester College and St Hilda’s College, Oxford. Her roles include a lectureship at Oxford Brookes University (2005-2024) and a Research Residency at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (2024-2025).
Her academic background includes a BA (Hons) and MA from Newcastle University. Her research bridges Music and History, focusing on 19th- and early-20th century Italian opera, British operatic culture, interwar social history, and national identities. She has authored influential books such as The Puccini Problem (2007) and Opera in the Jazz Age (2019), which won the Lewis Lockwood Award and were supported by major research fellowships.
Professor Wilson is an active cultural commentator, contributing to national media and collaborating with UK opera companies. Her work explores opera’s role in nationalism, modernity, and cultural politics. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2022.
