Professor Suzanne Aspden is an Associate Professor in Music at the University of Oxford and a Fellow and Tutor in Music at Jesus College. She holds a DPhil from Victoria University of Wellington (1999) with a thesis on 'Opera and Nationalism in mid-Eighteenth-Century Britain'. Her academic journey includes roles as a research fellow at Robinson College, Cambridge (1999–2002), lecturer at the University of Southampton (2002–2005), and the inaugural John Marshall and Marie Louise Osborn Fellow at Yale University’s Beinecke Library (2002–2003). She has also held visiting fellowships at the Huntington Library, Harvard’s Houghton Library, and Jadavpur University.
Her research focuses on Eighteenth-Century Opera, Handel, Nationalism, and Identity Politics. She teaches Music History, Criticism, and Aesthetics at the undergraduate level. Her work bridges historical analysis with cultural and political contexts, particularly exploring opera’s role in shaping national identities.
