Francesca Vella is an academic at Northumbria University, specializing in operatic cultures and musical mobilities. She holds a PhD in Music from King’s College London and has held postdoctoral fellowships at Cambridge University. Currently, she leads Northumbria’s Music Research Group and serves on Durham’s Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies advisory board.
Her research focuses on 19th-20th century opera’s role in shaping cultural identities, leveraging technologies like radio and transportation networks. Key works include Networking Operatic Italy (2021) and articles on Verdi’s operas and vocal celebrity culture.
Teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with modules on opera’s intersection with film, politics, and auditory cultures. She has designed courses like Opera on Screen and Music and the Environment.
