Alexandra Arellano is an Assistant Professor in Leisure Studies at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, holding a PhD in Sociology from Lancaster University. Her academic career includes a postdoctoral fellowship at the Fonds québécois de recherche sur la société et la culture and an internship at the Canada Research Chair in Urban Heritage.

Her research explores the festivalization of society, focusing on how contemporary popular festivals contribute to renewing cultural identities and urban heritage. She examines the social and cultural transformations driven by international tourism, particularly in post-industrial and post-colonial contexts. Her work also addresses sustainable tourism development and international cooperation projects, such as revitalizing cultural heritage in Cholula, Mexico.
Recent publications analyze trends in tourism mobilities, heritage management, and religious pilgrimage. Her forthcoming book will investigate interinstitutional challenges in international heritage initiatives. She previously taught at Leeds Metropolitan University's UK Centre for Events Management and is preparing a comparative study on Inca archaeological park tourism in Peru.
