Martin Drouin is a Professor in the Department of Urban and Tourism Studies at the School of Management, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). He served as coordinator of the UQAM Heritage Institute from 2006 to 2011 and currently holds the position of treasurer for the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada (SEAC/SSAC).
Drouin's educational background includes initial training in history followed by a doctorate in urban studies from UQAM/INRS. His doctoral research comprised two significant internships: one funded by the Fonds québécois de recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC) at the Institute of Geoarchitecture, University of Western Brittany, focusing on chapel preservation movements like the Breiz Santel association; and another supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) at UQAM, examining 'The Genesis of the Heritage Fight (Montreal, 1960-1973).'
His research centers on Quebec's built heritage history, with emphasis on heritage creation mechanisms and cultural meanings embedded in architectural conservation. Drouin investigates preservation associations as pivotal actors in heritage movements and analyzes heritage interpretation, popularization, and tourism integration. His work bridges urban studies, cultural heritage management, and tourism, revealing how community action shapes heritage value and urban identity. Key contributions include documenting postindustrial heritage transformations and comparative studies between Quebec and Brittany.
Drouin's extensive publication record spans journals like Téoros and Architecture Canada, with recurring themes in religious architecture conservation, intangible heritage debates, and tourism's impact on historic districts. His work shows evolving focus from Montreal-specific case studies (2005-2010) toward broader comparative frameworks addressing deindustrialization and climate change impacts on cultural landscapes.
He has secured research funding from FQRSC and SSHRC and maintains active roles in academic networks including the UQAM Heritage Institute, Centre communautaire Sainte-Brigide, Laboratoire d'analyse et de médiation spatialisées du patrimoine urbain, and SEAC/SSAC. Drouin contributes to major projects such as the Urban Heritage Atlas, 'Deindustrialization and the politics of our time,' and 'Company Towns in Canada,' while teaching graduate courses on urban heritage and patrimonialization.
Drouin directs student research in urban studies and has mentored numerous theses on heritage development. His laboratory affiliations support interdisciplinary work on spatial heritage mediation, with ongoing collaborations through PARVI and Respatrimoni networks focusing on community-based heritage valorization in postindustrial contexts.
