Alexandra (Bobbie) Garvin, Ph.D., serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology at East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine since 2023, where she leads a research program focused on cardiac fibrosis mechanisms in heart failure. Her work addresses critical gaps in understanding how cardiac fibroblasts drive pathological remodeling affecting millions of Americans.
Dr. Garvin's academic foundation includes:
- B.S. in Biology from Clemson University (2009)
- Ph.D. and postdoctoral training at The Pennsylvania State University's HUCK Institute for Life Sciences: Physiology (2010-2017)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix (2017-2022)
Her research program uniquely integrates cellular stress response analysis with molecular pathway dissection, specifically examining the coordinated dysfunction of cardiac myocytes and activation of fibroblasts in heart failure microenvironments. With particular emphasis on mitochondrial mechanisms sustaining fibroblast activation, her laboratory employs primary cell isolation and animal injury models to identify novel therapeutic targets for anti-fibrotic interventions. This work addresses the urgent need for treatments targeting the 6+ million Americans suffering from fibrosis-driven cardiac stiffening.
As an emerging independent investigator, Dr. Garvin is establishing her research trajectory with focus on translational cardiac pathophysiology. Prospective students interested in molecular cardiology and fibrosis mechanisms will find opportunities to contribute to groundbreaking work at the intersection of cellular metabolism and cardiac remodeling.
