Alexander Yong is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Michigan (2003). His research focuses on combinatorics, algebra, algebraic geometry, and their intersections with Lie theory, probability, and algorithms. He is particularly known for contributions to Schubert calculus, geometric representation theory, and combinatorial commutative algebra.
Yong's recent work emphasizes the structure of Schubert varieties, determinantal ideals, and cohomological minimality conjectures. His publications span journals like Journal of Algebra, Advances in Mathematics, and Journal of Commutative Algebra. He has received prestigious awards, including the Arnold O. Beckman Award (2018) and the G. de B. Robinson Award (2011).
He leads the Illinois Combinatorics Lab (ICLUE) and organizes advanced summer schools on representation theory, Lie theory, and Schubert calculus. His teaching and mentorship have been recognized with the Distinguished Teaching Award (2018). Past grants include the Beckman Fellowship (2011-2012) and Petit Professorial Scholar appointment (2012-2013).
