Alexander Thierry

Alexander Thierry is an Associate Professor of Art and Art Education in the Visual & Performing Arts department at South Carolina State University. He focuses on 3D studies and related technology with an emphasis on ceramic art within the B.A. in studio art ceramics and sculpture concentration. He also advises and serves as the art education specialist, training and supervising art education candidates for the B.S. in art education. Additionally, he serves as president of Faculty Senate and previously held the position of Vice-President of Faculty Senate (2019-present).

Thierry's artistic practice centers on the exploration of memory through ceramic materials. His philosophy states: 'A person is as alive as their memories and I truly believe that once a memory is lost, it is so hard to reclaim.' His work investigates how physical objects can represent and preserve memories, time, and events using diverse ceramic techniques including handbuilding, throwing, slip casting, and press molding combined with processes like slaking, growing plants, screen printing, laser etching, drawing, and 3D printing. His work ranges from temporary to permanent objects, exploring the variable nature of permanence in relation to memory.

His recent exhibition history demonstrates a strong focus on contemporary ceramics, with particular attention to functional forms like cups and vessels that carry conceptual meaning related to memory and relationships. His work often incorporates mixed media elements and explores the intersection of traditional ceramic techniques with modern technology, as seen in series like 'Tea Landscapes,' 'Vessel Landscapes,' and 'Current Works.'
