Dr. Alexander P. Clarkson is a Lecturer in German and European & International Studies at King’s College London, based in the School of Politics & Economics. He holds dual affiliations with the Department of European & International Studies and the German Department. Born in Canada and educated in Germany and at Balliol College, Oxford (BA 2000, PhD 2006), he previously taught at New College, Oxford before joining King’s in 2007. His research focuses on transnational diaspora communities’ political impacts in Germany/Europe post-1945, EU border militarization, and migration studies.
Research interests include diaspora politics (Ukraine, Algeria, Iran, Croatia, Turkey, Syria, Libya, Lebanon), EU border policies, and subcultures’ role in German political discourse. He supervises PhD topics in these areas. Teaching covers German history (19th-20th centuries), EU border systems, and the interplay of migration/securitization with European identity.
Key publications include Diaspora Power: The unknown History of Migrants in Germany since 1945 (2022), Fragmented Fatherland: Immigration and Cold War Conflict (2015), and contributions to Current History and Le Grand Continent. Active in research groups like the Critical European Studies group and European Foreign Policy group.
