Prof. Dr. Alexander Engel is a historian specializing in global and economic history, currently serving as Acting Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU). He is affiliated with the Faculty 09 Historical Seminar and represents the Chair of Modern and Contemporary History (Prof. Dr. Roland Wenzlhuemer).
- Doctorate (2007) and Habilitation (2020) in Economic and Social History at the Georg-August University of Göttingen
Research Interests encompass long-term economic and social transformations, particularly focusing on:
- Globalization and colonial economies
- History of capitalism and market systems
- Exchange relations, competition, and risk practices
- History of knowledge and digital history
- Commodity history and futures trading
