Dr. Benno Engels is a Senior Lecturer in the Urban Planning program at RMIT University's School of Global, Urban and Social Studies. His research focuses on urban political economy, planning history, social policy, and housing studies, with a particular emphasis on historical and theoretical dimensions of urban development. He has supervised 6 PhD completions, 2 Master's by Research projects, and over 15 Honours theses.
Engels' work explores topics such as metropolitan planning history, gentrification, neoliberalism's impact on welfare, and the interplay between capitalism and urban policy. His recent projects include analyses of public housing redevelopment costs in Melbourne and the evolution of community facility provision standards in metropolitan planning.
