Alexander Cooley serves as Director of Columbia University's Harriman Institute for the study of Russia, Eurasia and Eastern Europe and holds a professorship in the Department of Political Science at Barnard College. His academic career is deeply rooted at Columbia University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1999 and has since established himself as a leading scholar on post-Soviet states.
Professor Cooley's research focuses on how external actors influence sovereignty, governance, and development in former Soviet states, with particular emphasis on Central Asia and the Caucasus region. His scholarly work critically examines power dynamics between major global players and post-Soviet states, challenging conventional understandings of international relations in these regions.
Cooley has made significant contributions to academic literature through his influential books including Great Games Local Rules: The New Great Power Contest In Central Asia (Oxford 2012), which was described by Asia Policy as 'possibly the most cogent critique of post-Cold War orthodoxy published to date,' and Ranking the World: Grading States as a Tool of Global Governance (Cambridge 2015), co-edited with Jack Snyder, which explores international rankings as policy tools.
His expertise is widely recognized through numerous fellowships and advisory roles:
- Open Society Foundations fellowships
- Carnegie Corporation support
- Smith Richardson Foundation fellowships
- German Marshall Fund of the United States fellowships
Professor Cooley actively engages with policy communities, having testified before Congressional committees on Eurasian issues and serving on international advisory committees. He is a frequent commentator in major media outlets including the New York Times, Foreign Affairs, and Foreign Policy, bridging academic research with public discourse on critical geopolitical matters.
