Alex Gilvarry is a Visiting Associate Professor at Cornell University’s Department of Literatures in English within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds affiliations with the Creative Writing program and teaches courses such as ENGL 2800 (Creative Writing) and ENGL 3820 (Narrative Writing). His academic career includes roles at Wesleyan University, Columbia University, Southern New Hampshire University, and a decade as an associate professor and MFA program director at Monmouth University.
His research interests center on creative writing, fiction, and narrative techniques, reflected in his award-winning novels and critical essays. Gilvarry’s work has been published in prestigious outlets like The New York Times Book Review, The Nation, and NPR’s All Things Considered.
He has received notable accolades, including the Hornblower Award for First Fiction, National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35, and a PEN Open Book Award nomination. His fellowships include residencies at the Harry Ransom Center and the American Academy in Rome.
Gilvarry’s advising experience includes mentoring the MFA program at Monmouth University. He has also contributed to literary initiatives like EPOCH Literary Magazine and maintains an active public engagement through essays and media appearances.
